Kevin Murray was born March 12, 1960 in Los Angeles, California. A Democrat representing Southwest Los Angeles, he earned a BS from California State University, Northridge. He earned an MBA from Loyola Marymount University and earned his JD from Loyola Law School. He chaired the Assembly Transportation Committee. Before entering politics, he practiced law in the fields of entertainment, insurance, and real estate. He was elected to the Assembly in 1994. He and his father were the first in California to serve in the same legislative house at the same time. He served as the Assistant Democratic Floor Leader and Majority Whip. Elected to the Senate in 1998, he chaired the Senate Democratic Caucus, Senate Appropriations, Senate Elections and Transportation Committees. His legislative agenda focused on the entertainment industry, real estate and insurance. He also served as chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus. Upon retirement from the Legislature, he resumed his career in entertainment.
